Brockwell Park’s second Moth Night – Friday 13th July

Image

Brockwell Park is one of London’s most biologically diverse habitats.

Last year we saw many amazing August moths and this year, again led by moth expert David Gardner of Butterfly Conservation, we’re aiming to catch the earlier ones based in July and extend our knowledge of moths living in the Park.

Free and suitable for all the family, but no dogs please. Bring a torch, warm clothes and sensible footwear. The moth night will involve very little walking but will last several hours, depending on the weather.

It’s Dog Show time! – Sunday 15th July

2011 Dog Show competitors

Probably the best Dog Show in the world! If you like things fun that is…

Categories this year are:

  • Dog and owner fancy dress (“Kings, Queens and their Courts”)
  • Handsomest dog
  • Prettiest bitch
  • Golden oldie
  • Cutest puppy
  • Dog and spoon race [I have no idea! Ed]

If you can tear yourselves away from the intense competition there will be lots of stalls to take a look at and free micro-chipping and dog ID tags provided by Battersea Dogs’ Home.

The event is enthusiastically arranged by a committee of dedicated dog lovers, judged by carefully picked impartial judges (some expert, some… less so) and supported by Brockwell Vets, Norwood Road Vets and other local businesses to whom we are very grateful.

Registration opens at 12 midday and closes at 1.45 before the show starts at 2pm. Entry is £1.50 per dog, per category and registration forms are available from Brockwell Hall in advance if you’re of the organised type. Profits are donated to the Blue Cross animal charity and towards future MAD for Brockwell Park events (more on our fund-raising efforts soon).

Shakespeare in Brockwell Park – Tuesday 12th June to Sunday July 1st

Othello

Othello, a highly regarded military general, having just defended his secret marriage to Desdemona, is called to service in Cyprus to fend off foreign invasion. However, this is not the battle that unfolds.

Iago, one of Othello’s trusted military advisers is overlooked for promotion in favour of Cassio. This fuels an intensely bitter and racist hatred in Iago who orchestrates a venomous and deceitful scheme to bring Othello to his demise, using whoever crosses his path.

The Faction theatre company return to MAD for Brockwell Park with two plays this year: Othello and a return of the 2011 sell out A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Tickets are available through TicketWeb for matinee and evening performances and pre-show workshops. Follow The Faction blog to feel part of the preparations.

A Duke and an Amazon celebrate their engagement but can’t persuade Hermia to marry Demetrius. She and Lysander elope, but are pursued by their respective rivals. An amateur dramatics group of local tradesman rehearse the unexpectedly hilarious tale of tragic lovers Pyramus and Thisbe. They all end up in the mystical Athenian woods, where the fairy kingdom is in turmoil: the King and Queen of the fairies are at war over a beautiful Indian boy.

Victoriana – What the Dickens! Saturday 10th June

Victoriana

This year is the 120th anniversary of the opening of Brockwell Park as a public park so we are celebrating with a little nostalgia…

Immerse yourself in the late 19th Century with Punch and Judy, Face-painting, Reptile handling (including a 13ft Burmese Python !) and Garden Games.

For the more gentile we have silhouette and cameo making, watercolour fans, hat and parasol making.

The event will run from 12 – 4pm by Brockwell Hall. As Dickens would say: ‘What Larks!’

There is also an Exhibition in the Hall that will be open on from 10-4 from Thursday 7th to Sunday 10th on a history of the Park and its founders.
